Return to Welcome

CUBA a poor land, a communist land a land where many inhabitants say “ “There is no point having dreams as they can never happen.” To us a wonderful warm land with hospitable people sharing the little they have. We will return as soon as we can to further ENJOY CUBA

Music Every tiny town had a music hall where groups play from midday to 2 am Wonderful Cuban music stole our sleep. CDs are all we have left to bring back the memories. Look at the old lady dancing to the beat.

Day one On arrival in Santiago de Cuba we had a day of check ins. 3 Doctors, and 30 different folk all with a duty to do. Photographs were forbidden BUT I was allowed a pic of this Dog exhausted after sniffing all over our boat for refugees maybe. We used economic Marinas so we could travel inland. Cuba is the safest country we have been in.

Skippy our inflatable Kangaroo was a hit with every child as the 1970 Australian programme ‘Skippy the Bush Kangaroo’ had just made it to Cuban TV

Shopping in Cuba was hit and miss as many country people trade goods amongst themselves and do not bring them to the markets. Every little store is owned by the Government. Food is subsidised for the Cubans who earn about US$10 a month. All the professional people take cab driver or other tourist jobs as a $2 tip is 20%of a months wage. Left foto We barter old clothes, of incredible value to Cubans, with road side traders who, If caught doing this, can expect a long jail term.

Santiago de Cuba Marina

Cubans are allowed to keep all they owned prior to 1954. This is why there are so many wonderful old cars and homes with prestigeous antiques. After 1954 all housing is Government owned and cars are not attainable for the general citizens.
