VENEZUELA: land of resplendid outer islnds and inland high mountain populated by a wonderful people in site of their government

The outer Islands of
Venezuela are
pristine The Aves, Roques and many others

We spent four years round Venezuela. Sadly over this time raids by criminals on Sailing Yachts not only became more prevalent but guns were used. We were never threatened but our boat is old and we hung many electric fence signs around the rails. On the safe outer islands many enjoyable days were spent with Venezuelan fishermen. Musical parties at night and adventures by day were the norm. The snorkelling and fishing were superb.

On the mainland we often anchored against high cliffs after entering a narrow entrance to the bay between mangroves
On these particular cliffs we found petroglyphs

Yvonne was determined to make perfectly shaped arepas as every Venezuelan told us our arepas tasted good but the shape was apalling . She spent hours with this fisherman who crushed every one she made.
The end result is our delicious corn meal pancakes filled with meats or vegetables taste good but the shape remains bad.

In the Aves 5 yachts followed us into a tricky area as we had many years of coral reef navigation. The 12 of us then swam through the reef and found canons dumped by the Spanish in the 15th century
