These traps were built by the villagers of Karawab. On the left is a fish trap. The large bamboo is under water but not touching the bottom. The fish swims up and pulls the bait and the trap falls. Next is an enormous bow with a trip line for a jaguar to hit. Last is a noose with an advocado bait which when moved releases the springy branch tightening the noose. |

Cassava is shredded then boiled and placed in the woven matapai. The man sitting on the stick stretches the matapai squeezing all the water out of the boiled cassava. When dry the cylinders of cassava are grated and melted into a long lasting bread on hot plates |

We met these two lads shooting birds with slingshots. They became ardent birdwatchers and guides. They could spot birds long before we ever saw them, then train the telescope so we could enjoy the bird. |
