Guyana has few roads and is dependant on he rivers to move people and produce about. See the main road to Brazil. On some rivers, the Berbice is pictured massive tugs push ore laden barges. Rafts of logsdrift down stream to timber mills. Greenheart sleepers are paddled don in boats as the dense timber sinks. Jet boats carry miners and goods hundreds of miles up rivers.

Thousand ton rafts of logs drift downstream

Strong cargo boats and lighter fast water taxis are built of wood cheaply

Shallow draft water jet boats ply rivers for hundreds of miles

WE met a floating shop 100 miles upstream.

In the Pomeroon River Yvonne took a whole school, 10 at a time, to see our boat.

The main road to Brazil from Guyana is a quagmire. We had to walk several sections. Hence the importance of rivers.

Everywhere the Indians were really impressed with our bird books as no one in their village could draw a bird as accurately as in the books. Here some children are being shown a book. RHS the two lads who became proficient at identifying birds came back to the boat daily to check sightings against the literature All Indians were excellent spotters and enjoyed seeing birds a long time before we did.
